Why reserve storage space first and register later in Walrus?

Hey! I'm exploring different scenarios where it might be useful to reserve storage space now and register blobs later—possibly after several days. Also, how does the total storage capacity work in smart contracts during each epoch in Walrus? Is it consistent or variable across epochs?

Reserving storage space before registering a blob can offer flexibility in resource management. Providers might reserve a large amount of space, then distribute it among users. This setup is beneficial for enabling secondary storage markets and supports future functionalities like deletable blobs, where resources are reclaimed when blobs are deleted .

As for the total capacity limit, it refers to the maximum amount of encoded data that can be stored across all storage nodes for an epoch. This capacity isn't constant; it can change over time based on several factors, including the collective agreement among storage nodes. However, it won't drop below the amount of space already reserved . Some specific examples where reserving storage might be suitable include AI-related use cases for storing large models and datasets, which require guaranteed space before final data is ready. It could also be used for handling media for NFTs or dApps, where metadata needs to be prepared over time.
